Changing of the guard

Seven new deans took their oath of office before UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao in Monday, August 2 at the Bahay Kalinaw.

The new heads and their academic units are: Dr. Ben Paul B. Gutierrez (College of Business Administration), Dr. Arsenio M. Balisacan (School of Economics), Dr. Michael Tan (College of Social Sciences and Philosophy), Dr. Miguela Mena (Asian Institute of Tourism), Dr. Edna E. A. Co (National College of Public Administration and Governance), Dr. José S. Buenconsejo (College of Music) and Dr. Aura C. Matias (College of Engineering). Dr. Roberto E. Reyes also took his oath as Director of the UP Extension Program in Pampanga.

Atty. Marvic MVF Leonen, dean of the UP College of Law (CL) and Prof. Cayetano Paderanga of the School of Economics have been appointed by Pres. Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” C. Aquino III to top posts in his administration.

A constitutional expert and an advocate for the advancement of people’s rights, Leonen leads the government negotiating panel that will resume peace talks with the Moro National Liberation Front (MILF). Read more->

It was a morning well spent when US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry K. Thomas Jr. met with UP officials and professors, among them UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao, UP President Emerlinda R. Roman and UP Manila Chancellor Ramon Arcadio on 23 July at the Executive House at UP Diliman.
Over breakfast, Roman briefly discussed the UP System and the university’s role as the National University. After the presentation, upon the ambassador’s urging, academic heads discussed the challenges they faced in their respective colleges and disciplines. Among the professors were Dean Marvic Leonen of the College of Law, Dr. Randy David (College of Social Sciences and Philosophy/CSSP), Dr. Jose Dalisay (College of Arts and Letters), Dr. Rowena Cristina Guevara (College of Engineering), Dr. Mirriam Ferrer (CSSP) and Dean Caesar Saloma (College of Science).
Ambassador Thomas said he was “impressed with the depth and breadth of the programs” UP offers. He also thanked the faculty members for “breaking away from their busy schedules to join us today.”
Later, the ambassador met with some students as a number held a protest outside the venue.

Chinese ambassador visits UPD

Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Philippines Liu Jianchao paid a visit to UPD last July 13, gamely interacting with students and coming away impressed with its facilities and academic diversity.

During the visit, which culminated in a lively dialogue with Political Science students at the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP), Jianchao said the first thing that impressed him about UP was the beauty of its flagship campus, UPD. Read more->

Updated UP Diksiyonaryong Filipino now available

Diksiyonaryong Filipino.

A new and updated version of the UP Diksiyonaryong Filipino was launched July 29 at the Claro M. Recto Hall, Bulwagang Rizal, UP Faculty Center by Virgilio S. Almario, National Artist for Literature, Karina Bolasco, Anvil Publishing, Inc. Assistant General Manager, popular literary critic Dr. Isagani R. Cruz and UP Sentro ng Wikang (SWF) Filipino director Dr. Jovy M. Peregrino.

Almario, the publication’s editor-in-chief, said Bro. Andrew Gonzalez of De La Salle University inspired to create a monolingual dictionary as a way of achieving standardization in the Filipino language. Read more->

Despite heavy rains alumni and stakeholders gathered last July 14 to witness the inauguration and unveiling of the markers for the UP Centennial Dorm, with its partner building to be built soon.

The new building, located at the corner of Jacinto St. and C.P. Gacia Ave., was named Concordia B. Albarracin Residence Hall in honor of the mother of Dr. Magdaleno B. Albarracin, Vice Chairman of Philippine Investment-Management (PHINMA), Inc., College of Engineering (CoE) alumnus and mastermind of the dorm project. Read more->

UAAP Season 73 Opens

With the theme UAAP: Where Heroes Are Made,the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 73 opened on July 10 at the Araneta Coliseum.

This season’s host is the De La Salle University (DLSU).

UAAP President, Bro. Bernard S. Oca, FSC, welcomed the honored guests, alumni, students, supporters and the varsity teams from eight competing universities namely, the UP Fighting Maroons, DLSU Green Archers, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Eagles, University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamarraws, University of the East (UE) Warriors, Adamson University (AdU) Falcons, and the National University (NU) Bulldogs.  Read more->

  Stickers authorizing vehicular access to the UP Diliman campus are now available at the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs (OVCCA).

  Bulwagan ng Dangal (BnD), the University Heritage Museum shone the spotlight on UP landmarks last June 18 with the joint opening of “Diliman: Tracing the Terrain” at the main exhibition hall and a re-mounting of “Monochromed Memories: UP Landmarks Centennial Exhibition” at the Bulwagan ng Dangal: Atelyer, respectively.

  Flag-raising rites opened the University of the Philippines 102nd Foundation Day celebrations at UP Diliman on June 18, 8 a.m., at the Oblation Plaza. UPD Chancellor Sergio S. Cao presided over the rites, with members of the Chancellor’s executive staff and the community in attendance.
